Who Were the League of Women Voters? What Was Their Attitude to Black Women Suffragists?

League of Women Voters (LWV)- 1920

  • Founded in 1920 just 6 months before the 19th
  • Founded by Carrie Chapman Catt, it was a reorganisation of NAWSA.
  • Aimed to provide international support for women’s suffrage, overlook state legislatures to prevent sex discrimination and encourage women to use their vote.

However, when black suffragists sought help from them, they were apathetic.

At a conference in Ohio in 1921, they agreed a liberal compromise. They would listen to the black women’s complaints but would do nothing about them.
