What is Meant by the Gilded Age?

Mark Twain called the late 19th century the “Gilded Age.”

  • By this, he meant that the period was glittering on the surface but corrupt underneath.
  • Creation of the super-rich class along with extreme poverty.
  • This in turn led to the rapid Urbanisation in America during the Gilded Age and the massive influx of immigrants to the cities.
