The 19th Amendment as a Turning Point?

Women gaining the vote in 1920 could be seen as:

  • A reward for war work.
  • A symbolic extension of US democracy.
  • Result of an effective campaign by the NAWSA, but probably not because of a massive change of heart by American men.

The reform did not mean women could gain everything they wanted, it had since been suggested that once women were in Congress, they had to conform to the male dominated society, and vote in the way their husbands favoured.

The right to vote did not cure all evils.

AA women were especially affected by continued discrimination in wages, social attitudes, and the ability to exercise their rights.
