- The right to have abortions and ‘the right of women to control their reproductive lives.’
- They wanted national laws to uphold these rights.
- Paid maternity leave and tax concessions for housewives.
- Equality in areas such as education, employment and political organisations. These came under the umbrella of ‘true equality’ that NOW was campaigning for.
Other women’s groups such as the Women’s Equity Action League, that had broken away from NOW because of their support for abortion law-reform, pressed hard for equality in education.
They brought action against 300 schools and colleges that seemed to be discriminating against women.
NOW also brought legal action against employers that broke the 1967 executive order against sex discrimination by companies with federal contracts.
