From Which Movement Did Native-americans Gain Inspiration in the Late 1960s? What Form Did This Take?

Despite the emergence of the NIYC and successes in the courts, there were many Nas, particularly among the young who believed that progress in obtaining rights was too slow.

  • Inspired by movements such as ‘Black Power’, they adopted a more militant approach which culminated in the establishment of the American Indian Movement (AIM) in 1968, and with it, Red Power.
  • Its main aim was to tackle the discrimination that young NAs were facing.

They established groups to patrol the streets and monitor police activity, this resulted in a decline of the number of unjust arrests & imprisonments of young NAs.

  • AIM is similar to the Black Panthers (formed in 1966).

Red Power was taken directly from Black Power and many of the tactics and the desires to create a mass movement and pride in their race / culture were followed from the inspiration of Malcolm X.
