From 1924-1956 many western states would deny Indians the right to vote. Despite the changes brought about in the 14th and 15th Amendments, the Constitution still granted the states great autonomy with regards to suffrage and until the voting rights Act of 1965, states had almost unlimited power to make rules for franchise.
The states used poll taxes, literary tests, English language tests (similarly to AAs) and even refused to place polling stations in or near Indian communities, forcing them to travel 10s of miles.
