Inextricably linked to globalisation → magnitude, complexity and impacts make it a priority
issue for almost all nations. Most migrants contribute to host nation but international
migration entails loss of human resources from countries of origin and potential tension in
country of destination.
Economic migrants = a person who moves (permanent or semi-permanent) to improve
standard of living / job
Migrant remittances = Money transferred between countries by migrants to support
friends, family and community
Refugees = a person who has moved from their country of nationality or usual domicile in
fear of persecution or death
Asylum seekers = a person who seeks entry to another country by claiming to be a refugee
Immigration = In-migration of permanent change of residence
Emigration = out-migration of permanent change of residence
International migrant stock = number of people born in a country other than that in which
they live.
