The Equilibrium Constant Kc

Equilibrium Constant: Kc. A measure of the position of equilibrium.
• Equilibrium Law: Square brackets shorthand for ‘concentration of’. a, b, c and d are balancing
numbers- the powers. A, B, C and D are the equilibrium concentrations of products and reactants.
• Write expression- no numbers, only the elements in square
brackets.
• Interpreting Kc: The magnitude of Kc indicates relative of proportion of reactants and products.
– Kc of 1 indicates position of equilibrium that is halfway between reactants and products.
– Kc of greater than 1 indicates position of equilibrium that is towards products, lies on the right.
– Kc value of less than 1 indicates position of equilibrium that is towards reactants, lies on the
left.
– The larger the value, the further position of equilibrium and greater concentrations of
products than reactants.
• Kc increasing/ decreasing shifts equilibrium.
