Polyamides

Polyamides: Polyamides are condensation polymers when monomers joined together by amide
linkages in long chain. Can be made from one monomer or two monomers…
 3) Polyamides Made from One Monomer:
– Polyamides made from one monomer containing either carboxylic acid (or acyl chloride) and
an amine group i.e. an amino acid.

– Amino acids undergo condensation polymerisation to form polypeptides/ dipeptides.
– Water is lost. Amide linkage between O=C-N-H.
– NH at one end of repeat unit and C=O at other end of repeat unit.
 4) Polyamides Made from Two Monomers:
– Polyamides made from two monomers, one monomer dicarboxylic acid (diacyl chloride) and
other monomer containing two amine groups diamine.
– Double bond O either side of carboxylic bit and NH either side of amine bit. In the middle is
amide bond.
 E.g. various types of nylon used for ropes and fabrics.
