Addition Polymerisation: AS alkenes form polymers by addition polymerisation. Monomer of
addition polymerisation will contain C=C-. Double bond breaks (pi bond breaks) in polymer and is
replaced by single bond. In monomer double bond should be at either side. Imagine double
bond opening up like a book double bond monomer = 2x single bond in polymer.
Condensation Polymerisation: Another type of polymerisation. Condensation polymerisation
are the joining of monomers with loss of a small molecule, usually water of HCl.
Condensation Polymers: Polyesters and polyamides are examples of condensation polymers.
‘Draw the structure of the repeat unit’- only draw one repeat unit, use brackets to make clear.
Make sure understand if question asking for addition or condensation or hydrolysis (and which
type).
Draw two repeat units- two repeat units and bracket around both.
The C=O and NH/ OH must be next to each other to be amide/ ester bond. May have to
orientate/ flip molecule so it’s possible.
Two ways of degrading polymers- biodegradable and photodegradable.
General formula for amino acids is RCH(NH2)COOH.
