Simple Molecular Structures
- These are gases, liquids or solids with low melting points. Examples include water, chlorine, oxygen…etc
- The covalent bonds between the
atoms in a molecule are strong.- However, the forces of attraction between these molecules (inter-molecular forces) are weak.
- They have low melting points, since not a lot of heat is needed to provide the energy for the molecules to move away from each other, hence, overcome the intermolecular forces between them.
- They tend to be insoluble in water.
- They are often soluble in organic solvents.
- They do not conduct electricity because the molecules have no overall charge and there are no electrons mobile enough to move from molecule to molecule.
