Simple Molecular Structures

  • These are gases, liquids or solids with low melting points. Examples include water, chlorine, oxygen…etc
  • The covalent bonds between the
  • atoms in a molecule are strong.
  • However, the forces of attraction between these molecules (inter-molecular forces) are weak.
  • They have low melting points, since not a lot of heat is needed to provide the energy for the molecules to move away from each other, hence, overcome the intermolecular forces between them.
  • They tend to be insoluble in water.
  • They are often soluble in organic solvents.
  • They do not conduct electricity because the molecules have no overall charge and there are no electrons mobile enough to move from molecule to molecule.
