Immediate source of energy in cells
Respiration: energy released from glucose is used to make ATP
Carries energy around the cell where it is needed
ATP is synthesised from ADP and inorganic phosphate using energy
ATP diffuses to the part of the cell that needs energy and is then broken back down into ADP and inorganic phosphate, releasing chemical energy
ADP and inorganic phosphate are recycled so the process starts again
