ATP (ADENOSINE TRIPOSPHATE)

ATP (ADENOSINE TRIPOSPHATE)

  • Immediate source of energy in cells
  • Respiration: energy released from glucose is used to make ATP
  • Carries energy around the cell where it is needed
  • ATP is synthesised from ADP and inorganic phosphate using energy
  • ATP diffuses to the part of the cell that needs energy and is then broken back down into ADP and inorganic phosphate, releasing chemical energy
  • ADP and inorganic phosphate are recycled so the process starts again
