4.6.10 The role of negative feedback in maintaining systems within narrow limits

Negative feedback systems aim to keep something (e.g. blood [glucose] or body temperature) at a constant level.

 

Negative feedback works as follows;

 

  1. Signal causes action

 

  1. Action has effect

 

  1. Effect removes original

 

E.g.

 

  1. High [glucose] in blood causes insulin release

 

  1. insulin stimulates liver to take up glucose & convert it into glycogen stores

 

  1. [glucose] falls
