Redox Reactions

Redox Reactions

Oxidation – the gain of oxygen; the loss of hydrogen; the loss of electrons; increase in the oxidation number

Reduction – the loss oxygen; the gain of hydrogen; the gain of electrons; decrease in the oxidation number

Oxidising Agents (Oxidants) – the molecule that is reduced (lost oxygen, gained hydrogen etc.)

Reducing Agents (Reduced) – the molecule that is oxidised (gained oxygen, lost hydrogen etc.)

Oxidation Number – numerical bookkeeping system to help keep track of electron movements between substances. The oxidation number of ions is there electric charge. Elements have an oxidation number of 0.
