Structure of a Neurone

Cell body

  • Includes nucleus- genetic material of the cell

Dendrites

  • Branch-like structures, carry nerve impulses from neighbouring neurones towards the cell body

Axon

  • Carries electrical impulses away from the cell body, down the length of the neurone- covered in fatty layer of myelin sheath that protects the axon, gaps in the axon called nodes of Ranvier speed up the transmission of the impulses

Terminal buttons

  • Communicate with next neurone across synapse
