Shoreline Management Plan 15 – Hurst Spit to Durlston Head

  • This SMP is led by Bournemouth Borough Council
  • The main areas of focus are the Poole and Christchurch Bays – it is also known as Subcell 5F
  • The Plan was originally developed by Poole and Christchurch Bays Coastal Group in 1999, and later reviewed between October 2008 and November 2009
  • The coastal group is made up of maritime local authorities – Purbeck, Poole, Christchurch, Bournemouth and the New Forest
  • The area of the plan includes coastal communities like Swanage, Studland, Poole, Bournemouth, Christchurch, Highcliffe, Barton-on-Sea and Milton-on-Sea – it stretches around 190km
  • A range of the four management options have been used in this SMP
    • Along the majority of the Bournemouth section of the coastline, for example, authorities have been trying to hold the line – retaining the currently present 53 groynes – some attempts have also been made to advance the line, with beach nourishment for example – this is all part of the Bournemouth Beach Management Scheme, taking place between 2015 and 2032
    • There has been a Nearshore Beach Replenishment Trial – this trial was carried out beginning in 2015, and was started to investigate if small amounts of sand placed on the seabed quite near to the shore can be moved on to and then along the beach by prevailing winds and tidal currents – the trial found that this is an effective solution, as not only is it relatively cheap, it is sustainable to only use small amounts of sediment at a time, and does work effectively in building up the beach more, especially in quite a closed beach
    • The review of the SMP designated the ‘hold the line’ policy at many places along the coastline – this involves not changing too much, and using beach replenishment quite a bit
    • Whitley Lake Sea Defence Feasibility – this project has taken place between 2013 and 2018 – although there is a sea wall on the beach/foreshore at Whitley Lake, erosion has reached the wall in some places, and could undermine the foundations – this study/scheme aims to establish a saltmarsh foreshore and sandy beach in front of the hard engineering techniques
