○ -ve → farmers lost a major source of income
○ +ve→ salt marshes can be used to graze cattle
● Local fishermen
○ -ve → new area is now a nature reserve ; might make fishing more difficult as there will be rules to
protect environment
○ +ve → newly flooded area is expected to become an important fishing nursery ; boost for local
fishing industry
● RSPB members (nature reserve charity)
○ +ve → very happy, as there is now 300 hectare area for wildlife to live
● Holiday home managers
○ +ve → nature reserve and new 10 km of footpaths/7 km of bike paths will attract tourists
○ +ve → these people may stay in holiday homes; business will earn more money
● Local people
○ -ve → project cost total of £28 million – some locals thought that cheaper methods of management
should have been used
○ -ve → rest of the money could’ve been used to improve roads/schools
○ +ve → many residents are happy about the scheme as it has reduced the chance of flooding
○ +ve → effectiveness of the defences has been proved by the fact that the area experienced no
flooding in the 2013 winter storms ; which would’ve easily broken through the original shingle ridge
