Water Transport

Water and substances dissolved in the water are transported around plants in veins. Veins contains vessels called xylem and phloem.

Xylem:

  • Carries water and dissolved mineral ions up to the leaves

Phloem:

  • Sucrose is dissolved in water and carried up and down the plant

Transpiration – the evaporation of water from inside leaves out into the air. It causes water to move up the plant from the roots and causes more water to enter the roots by osmosis.

Climatic factors that impact transpiration:

  • High temperature
  • Light
  • Wind
  • Low humidity

Diffusion:

  • Move along concentration gradient
  • No energy needed
  • High to low

Active transport:

  • Move against concentration gradient
  • Energy needed
