Anaerobic Respiration

 

 

        The release of energy from glucose without using oxygen.

        Glucose à lactic acid + energy

Advantages:

·         Useful for when oxygen cannot be delivered fast enough

Disadvantages:

·         Releases less energy than aerobic respiration

·         Lactic acid is not removed from the body and must be broken down after exercise

EPOC:

·         Anyone who exercises hard will find their breathing and heart rate take a while to return to normal when exercise has ended

·         This is known as excess post-exercise oxygen consumption
