1. ACT OF SETTLEMENT
– (1701) Codified the rules for succession of the throne (monarch had to be CofE and ruled all of UK). It also protected judge’s salaries to ensure that they wouldn’t influence their decisions.
– It also decided that to remove a judge the monarch and parliament has to jointly agree.
2. PARLIAMENT ACTS
– (1911/49) Defined the relationship between Commons and Lords.
– 1911: triggered by rejection of “People’s Budget” in 1909 – Lords lost ability to regulate public finances and could delay legislation for max 2 years + couldn’t veto legislation.
– 1949: delay reduced to 1 year > made commons superior house.
3. EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES ACT
– (1972) Brought UK into EEC in 1973 (EU). Subsequently European Union Law became binding on all legislation passed by the UK Parliament
– Followed by the European Act (2017), that gave parliamentary consent to the UK’s exit from the European Union.
