What is the nature of democracy?

  • You are only unable to vote if you are not a UK citizen, a member of the Lords, in prison or have been committed of illegal practices in an election in past 5 years.
  • FTPA (2011) requires general elections to be held every five years on the first Thursday in May – before the monarch dissolved parliament on the advice of PM.
  • The Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act (2000) established a new independent Electoral Commission to oversee all UK elections, ensuring that spending limits and other election laws are obeyed.
