• Separating government from religion and International advisors → democratic and
coherent government.
• Sanitation for young women and NGO school development → Education
• Minimum wage system → Stable employment
• Border and maritime control → Managed migration and fair global trading
• Emergency Aid and disaster planning → Increase response and decrease risk.

Occurs at varying scales
Supranational = UN
Regional = ASEAN
National = Government
Local = NGOs

Humanitarian Intervention
Action taken in a sovereign state to protect people at risk from war, famine, flood,
genocide, etc…
Government responsibility to protect civilians but if not achieved the international
community is responsible to act.
• Conflict = complex; concerns raised by national population over military
intervention.
• Natural hazards = more simple

NATO
North Atlantic Treaty Organisation – A military alliance of 28 countries providing collective
defence.
1948 counter-weight to Soviet Union.
+ Collective defence/security if one attacked and secure partners for multi-lateral
intervention.
– ‘Russian Problem’ = Risk but no real attack threat on NATO member
UN Intervention
UN Peacekeepers
122 countries voluntarily contribute 93,000 troops for global peace and stability.
15 peacekeeping missions over 4 continents using experts in HR, disarming, electoral
assistance, rule of law etc…
Protects civilians, contains conflict and builds sustainable peace; often in hostile
environments.
